My Grandad, Tommy Nicholls, was an engine driver based in Oswestry. When I was a little girl he used to walk me down to the sheds at Oswestry station on a Sunday morning and I was allowed to climb up into the montrously big steam engines that were housed inside them.
At a later date, my family lived alongside the railway at Greenfields in Pant. When Grandad was taking the train back to Oswestry from Llanymynech he sometimes used to fling out a parcel of meat scraps into our orchard for our Labrador as he went past.
I remember the last passenger train using that line. The carriages were crammed full of people waving at our family standing on the lawn, At a late date my father photograhed the railway track being taken up and removed. What a sad day.

I live in Edinburgh now, but I grew up in Penygarreg Lane and I caught my first fish in Piccadilly Pond - a little gudgeon - on a cane rod with a cotton line. Trains in the lane again! I am old enough to remember them the last time around. Steam whistles hooting as I lay abed. Hiding in my mother's skirts as an iron dragon puffed and snorted its way around Llanymynech Hill. Not a jot to see of a station now in Pant, save the names of the houses - Station this and Station that - on Station Road. Looking forward to the day when I can get on a train in Edinburgh and go all the way to Penygarreg Halt and be half a minute from my cherry tree in my boyhood garden.

Hello Dan, a very good site - thankyou! I was the one with the flat batteries just before Britannia went by at Babbinswood...

It occurs to me to mention a slide that I lent to someone of a steam train emerging from the footbridge at Llanaber, about to pass/stop at Barmouth.

I've no idea who had it, I was responding to a request in a railway group but I think it was someone up in the North Wales-or so neck of the woods. If you ever see it go by, please let me know!

It's my no.53 - 16th October 1963.

I can rarely make these recognition things work...

I have just found this web site . As a former resident of Oswestry, now retired to France , I thoroughly enjoyed getting up to date on progress.
I was fortunate enough to be out working one day and got stopped at the road crossing at Porthywaen by the last granite train to use the line.Needless to say I did not have my camera .

Doctors often recommend this medicine for the relief of allergies in children because it is extremely safe and available without a prescription. generic cialis double

In the early 1950's I was at school in Ellesmere and 6 times per year I would transit London - Crewe - Gabowen - Oswestry - Ellesmere and v.v. I am delighted that your 2 organisations have now re-united in restoring this raiway. I now live in NSW, Australia and regularly keep an eye on the developments via the web sites. We used to follow Alun Evans weekly reports and sadly miss his passing. For the last 30 years I have belonged to a major heritage railway in NSW and we are delighted to note your steady progress although we are curious to hear what is happening about the efforts to purchase Llynclys Junction.
Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Sam

As a small boy I lived near Blodwell Juntion and was taken by the station master, Mr Lewis, collecting bird's eggs which was permitted in those days! I also travelled to Llangynog and back to Blodwell Junction so can confirm there was a station on the far side of the bridge over the Llansantffraid road which seems to be missing from some maps. I also went attend a school that was evacuated from the South to Llangedwyn Hall and recall watching shunting in the station siding from our sports field. I also used the GWR railcar from Oswestry to Gobowen to connect with the main line. These events were in 1944/46! I now live near Chester so will try and visit the area again soon. I've just found your site through the Facebook page. I have a great interest in the Oswestry district railways, My grandparents lived at Morda; my grandfather was a carpenter in the Cambrian Works and retired shortly before the works closed.

I have distant memories of Oswestry through travelling down from Northwich on the train - changing at Gobowen and the shuttle steam train to Oswestry (early 60's). I can remember doing the shed with my older brother, and holidays spent with our Aunt at Gobowen about 1965 - 1966 when the Oswestry shuttle DMU was all that remained of Oswestry trains, and Class 47's on the Paddington to Birkenhead trains.

I look forward to hearing more on the restoration of the local railways and hope to visit again soon....

Just read looked at/read all the news. Great to see that the society and trust have finally got over their petty differences and have agreed to become one. Even though I live in Ludlow, i'm still interested and was checking the news from time to time all last year 2009.

Hopefully network rail will agree to a link with the main line at Gobowen being created so I could eventually get a train there to see the progress for myself.

I don't like the look of the picture of the A495 bridge with the track submerged in water. The wooden sleepers are bound to be rotton but I hope the rails haven't rusted away either!

Also the bridge being held up by the two massive brick columns, I wonder how much repair work will be needed to make it's structurally sound again.

Fantastic to see real progress at last and the merger is great news. You have terrific scope here. The sleeping giant begins to awake methinks! More power to all your elbows with restoration work chaps and we look forward to reading all your news. This will be a wonderful area to visit regularly in the near future. Now that the WHR is nearly completed, hopefully you can get more of the limelight and deserved success that reopening and line extensions bring with them. Very good luck to all of you

A really great website and excellent to hear such good news that the trust and society become one. The lines potential with rail connection at Gobowen, great station at Oswestry and then 2 sperate routes will put it up there with the best when its done.

Brilliant to see the Light Railway transform from a caterpillar into a healthy butterfly. All steam to your boilers TVLR, you are succeeding with exactly what you said you would do two years ago. Look forward to seeing the station develop next!
